Nosaj Thing vs. Aalto, MeetFactory, 01:10 AM 03/14

In Los Angeles there is one of the strongest music scenes now. That stands for noise (in local club The Smell first gigs of Abe Vigoda, HEALTH or The Mae Shi were played), as well as for embed hype of glitch-hop – the easiest way to find the best musicians is starting in LA. One of the most original representative of glitch-hop, Nosaj Thing, née Jason Chung, was growing up in the neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

He started to gobble Californian G-funk even before the pubescence and then he moved to classical funk and artists from Warp. But the biggest influence of youth was with no hesitation art collective and label Brainfeeder and the scene which arose around the Low End Theory club. It was the Low End Theory – where regularly play Samiyam, Ras G, The Gaslamp Killer, D-Styles, Flying Lotus or Daedelus – where was Nosaj Thing baptized. His very first gig was there.

It can't be said that Nosaj Thing fill the empty places – Warp, Hyperdub or Werk Discs are replete of such electronic music. But even if Harmonic 313, Lone, Lukid and aforesaid change veins and make you dance with tears in eyes, they don't slip between dance potential and the black mood even within the one track. Furthermore, all of them at least partly tend to dubstep or warped basses, while Nosaj Thing prefer protracted keyboard and synth layers. On the debut album Drift, which was released last year on the Alpha Pup, he managed to combine heart-breaking keyboard and machine-gun beat. And vocals in whimsical shape on the top. You won't find them out unlike murmuring, moaning, groaning samples from which you can get creepiness.

He likes changing veins at shows, once he chops Asian samples like French beatmaker Onra does, another time he plays fragments of Mr. Oizo's tracks. Visual art is also important to Jason. He has always good-class projections and he has performed in a special audiovisual set several times. It won't be otherwise at Lunchmeat festival, where he will be playing at a stage which will be created from A to Z by Romain Tardy aka Aalto.

"At first it took a while to create my own sound. I played guitar on some tracks, I sang on others. I knew I wanted to make music, I just didn't know exactly what it was going to be. But whatever it was always had that hip-hop backbone to it," says Nosaj Thing for Resident Advisor.

If this statement is still valid, Nosaj Thing has changed hip-hop beyond recognition.
